The Birth of a Nation details the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in 1831. Like the real man, Nat Turner is a morally complicated character in the film. Having experienced several visions, Turner sees himself as a savior sent to bring justice to slave owners. He leads a gang of freed slaves on a murderous rampage in which no white person is spared. Men, women, and even children are killed. The authorities, of course, set out to stop the uprising. Part revenge movie and part meditation on race in America, The Birth of a Nation is a provocative film with themes that are as relevant today as they've ever been.
