Based on the true story of U.S. cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, Captain Phillips begins with a routine journey that goes very wrong when a band of desperate bandits invades Phillips' vessel. When the ship's engines conk out, and the treasure onboard is too small for the brigands, they hop on a lifeboat and take the captain hostage - hoping to extract a sizable ransom. This leads to a tense standoff between the pirates, kept in line by their by ruthless leader Muse, and the U.S. Navy. They would rather see Phillips dead than see the pirates succeed in their mission, with Phillips trapped in the middle.
