This tank equipped with a formidable 17-pounder anti-tank gun was specifically designed to counter the heavy German Panther and Tiger tanks which outmatched the standard Shermans in firepower and armor. The Fireflys introduction into service provided a much-needed boost in anti-tank capability for British and Commonwealth forces.In 1944 the Firefly VC served with distinction in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards part of the 8th Armoured Brigade.
